today in virginia beach. and he went right at mr. romney on foreign policy and the wars. and he is -- he's right there when he says that we don't know what mr. romney would do if he became president. mr. romney has said recently and vaguely that he supports what president obama is doing in afghanistan in terms of there being a timeline for leaving but he has also said he was against a timeline for leaving in the past. so really who knows? he's not even trying. the closest we've gotten to any competing cogent republican position on the war is probably what we got from senator john mccain at the republican convention when he said that the afghanistan war just shouldn't end. he also thinks that the iraq war shouldn't have ended. so i'm not sure that it's a politically viable position. even if it is an internally cogent one from the senator. for this year's nominee, it's apparently just not going to happen. not unless he starts it now. 40 days out, mitt romney did get as close as he gets to talking about the issue today. in that he spoke before a group of veterans and talked about a concern

answers, sam. >> well, first of all, it is easy and we know it's easy because this is mitt romney's second position on text policy. this was a revision of his earlier position in the primary. he wanted to simplify it, make it more appealing to primary voters and so he said okay let's do a 20% across the board rate reduction and we'll fill in the gaps eliminating some deductions and exemptions. keep in mind that the american public are too bored by this. two weeks ago the senior adviser for the romney campaign said people are ready to know about the policies. that's when he said we're going to fill in the details. obviously they haven't done that. but you're right. it's very simple. you just have to make the math up. but they realize as soon as they name one deduction or one exemption that they're going to be attacked for it and they're going to try to do it until the very day of the election. >> i really crack up when i hear paul ryan use the word baseline, as if it's a very heavy, technical term that if we get into anything involving this word "baseline", everybody is going to get confuse

? the problem for romney is that so many of his policy recommendations either have been completely lost in the cloud of ridiculousness that's enveloped his campaign and the lack of discipline or the policies that are he proposed are policies that can be portrayed as being just like george w. bush's policies. he must talk about the future. he has to persuade people he has a plan going forward. his problem is that most of his plans wreak of the past, and the obama campaign will attack him for that. but if he doesn't pivot to the future, he's just going to lose this election because people have now decided right now that more or less they think barack obama's better on the economy, and that's the biggest change in the polls recently is obama taking the lead for the first time in who voters trust going forward. >> and he doesn't have a message that is consistent. because in ohio, he confused his tax message. so if he is going to offer tax cuts and then say but you will have the same amount of money because i'm going to eliminate deductions, but president obama actually didn't increase your
